Be Vigilant against New Tactic for Impersonating Officials: Alleging You “Spreading News on Tai Po Fire” or “Raising Funds Illegally in Mainland”
2025-12-04
Defaulting Tricks
Recently, scammers who impersonate Mainland public security officers or HKSAR government officials call Hongkongers, making false allegations such as:
“You made posts in the Mainland to raise funds illegally on the pretext of the Tai Po fire.”
“You spread news on the Tai Po fire, and are suspected of committing illegal acts.”
By inventing such excuses, scammers threaten victims with the requirement of travelling to the Mainland immediately to facilitate investigations. They also demand personal data, cash or transfers of money, and even ask victims to install malware.
Our Advice
Mainland officials or law enforcement agencies will never make calls to Hong Kong to carry out investigations, and will never ask Hongkongers to travel to the Mainland;
If callers claim themselves “public security officers”, hang up at once;
Be vigilant against calling numbers with the prefix “+86”;
Genuine law enforcement officers will not ask for your online banking passwords, or ask you to transfer money to designated bank accounts when investigating cases;
If you suspect that you have fallen prey to a scam, you should call the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222” for enquiries.
