Defrauding Tricks

Some posts sharing investment tips on social media seem to be legitimate, but there are traps behind them!  Recently, a number of people, lured by the high return, joined an “investment exchange group”. Even $7.8 million was scammed from a professional!  The scammers, using real investment recommendations as cover, gradually lured the victims into a trap which was impossible to guard against.  The scammers even disguised themselves as Qube Research & Technology (QRT) to create applications.  QRT has issued a warning, emphasising that it does not offer any services to individual investors.

 

Defrauding Process

Luring victims to join a group: Scammers made posts which share investment tips and appear to be professional on social media to attract victims to join an “investment exchange group”.

Pretending to be experts: The scammers, disguising themselves as investment experts, share an investment plan with a big 300% return in the group.  They organise “fraudulent group members” to reply enthusiastically to create a false impression.

Luring victims to make transfers: They ask the victims to download an investment app called “Qube HK” to transfer money to designated accounts.

Failing to withdraw money: The victims realise that they have fallen prey to a scam only after they are unable to withdraw money.

 

Devilish Details

  • Fraudulent experts offering real recommendations: Scammers, disguising themselves as investment experts, offer real investment recommendations to create credible images.

  • Number tame head” trick: Initially, the scammers provide accurate forecasts about stock prices to allow victims to earn modest profits and boost their confidence.

  • AI gimmick: Claiming that their investment platform utilises artificial intelligence (AI), they say that the platform gets the buying and selling timing right to lure the victims into a trap.

  • Posing as investment fund: The scammers disguise themselves as Qube Research & Technology (QRT) to create applications, social media accounts, websites and email domains.  QRT has issued a firm statement (https://www.qube-rt.com/fraud-and-impersonation-warnings), asking people to note that QRT does not offer any services to individual investors, does not offer any mobile trading or other apps and does not solicit business via WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook, Instagram, WeChat, Xiaohongshu or any other social media platform, and will not offer individual investors direct investment in equities, cryptocurrencies or any other securities in any circumstances.

  • Stay alert and do not rashly believe the so-called “investment experts” you meet online;

  • Do not hastily click on hyperlinks, download mobile applications, log on to any suspicious websites or download any attachments;

  • The bank accounts provided by scammers usually belong to individuals or third-party agencies, with names different from the trading platforms’;

  • You may enter suspicious phone numbers, URLs or transferees’ account numbers on “Scameter” of CyberDefender or “Scameter+”, the mobile application of “Scameter”, for security check in addition to seeking verification from relevant organisations;
