Notice for Nepali Residents in Hong Kong! Beware of Telephone Deception from "Indian Police"
2025-04-10

Defrauding Tricks

Multiple cases targeting Nepalese residents in Hong Kong have been reported recently, with losses ranging from tens of thousands to HKD 200,000.

Scammers impersonating Indian police officers make WhatsApp "cold calls," falsely accusing victims of money laundering and claiming investigations by Indian Police and the Nepalese government. Victims are instructed to continue communication via WhatsApp.

Calls are then transferred to a second scammer posing as a staff member of the Consulate General of Nepal, Hong Kong, who demands that the victim transfer money to designated bank accounts as 'guarantee money' to prove their innocence. Once the funds are transferred, the scammers cut off all contact.

Our Advice

  • Don’t be credulous to callers;

  • If contacted by someone alleging to represent the Nepalese Consulate, Hong Kong, immediately authenticate their credentials via the official hotline: (852) 2369 7813;

  • Even if strangers who send you messages are able to tell your personal information, it does not necessarily mean that they are genuine law enforcement officers. Scammers can obtain the personal information of the public by unlawful means;

  • Genuine law enforcement officers will not ask for your online banking password in investigation of cases, or ask you to transfer money to designated bank accounts;

  • If you suspect that you have fallen prey to a scam, please call the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222” for enquiries.
