Click Farming is Way to Bankruptcy - Guide to See through Three Tricks
2025-02-20

Defrauding Tricks

Recently, there has been a spate of fraud cases of “click farming”, in which scammers tricked a number of members of the public out of money with excuses of “follow celebrities’ IG to earn commissions”, “job opportunities”, “business partnership”, etc. The victims included white-collar workers with high academic qualifications and retirees. The loss in one of the cases was as much as $5 million!

Scammers randomly added members of the public into groups on instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram, claiming that they could earn commissions simply by placing orders, reselling goods or following celebrities’ accounts, adding that academic qualifications or experience were not required and they could even work from home. Once the recipients showed their interest, the scammers would entice them to download fraudulent shopping applications or create accounts on fraudulent websites, and ask them to top up their accounts to carry out so-called “tasks”.

For the first few “tasks”, the scammers would keep their promises and transfer the shopping amounts and commissions to the victims so as to gain their trust. However, as the victims advanced more money for large amount shopping, the scammers would delay paying the victims with excuses such as “insufficient credit” and continue to defraud the victims of money until they had none left.

Beware of Three Tricks

  • Names of large enterprises are included in the names of strange groups on WhatsApp or Telegram, such as “Instagram - Official Task Group” and “ZALORA - D80”;

  • Scammers pose as customer service chatbots and seek to gain trust with auto-replies, such as “Please enter [1] for topping up points” and “Please wait patiently for the order to be matched”;

  • Scammers give their customer service staff titles of “senior analyst” and “data analyst” that sounds professional.
