Quick Ways to Identify Counterfeit $500/$1,000 Banknotes
2025-01-23

Defrauding Tricks

Stay alert to “counterfeit banknote gangs”! The risk of counterfeit HK$500 and $1,000 banknotes circulating in the market has increased. Besides, there have been occasional reports of members of the public or shop tenants receiving counterfeit banknotes in Hong Kong. The police hereby remind members of the public of the six features of banknotes and help them avoid losses!

First, dynamic shimmering pattern. Slightly tilt the note and see if the colour of the pattern at the top right hand corner will change and the shimmering ring inside will move correspondingly.

Second, windowed metallic thread. Check if a metallic thread is woven into the note and the denomination numeral on the thread matches that of the note.

Third, embossed feel. Touch the note and check if it gives an embossed feel.

Fourth, concealed denomination. When the note is slightly tilted under light, the denomination numeral hidden in the background can be seen.

Fifth, Enhanced watermark. Check if the note has a watermark.

Sixth, fluorescent see-through denomination. The patterns on the front and back, which are of a single colour under normal light, will appear as two fluorescent colours when exposed to ultraviolet light. The patterns on the front and back fit perfectly to form the denomination numeral when the note is held up to the light.

Please note the following six points when receiving banknotes:

1) Counterfeit banknotes are different from genuine ones in terms of texture, watermark, security thread, colour, layout and printing quality.

2) The position and clarity of watermarks and security threads are keys to distinguishing between genuine and counterfeit banknotes.

3) Genuine banknotes have a typically firmer paper texture.

4) The printing of genuine banknotes is mostly very clear, with no deckle or fuzzy edges around texts and images.

5) Scammers may insert counterfeit banknotes between genuine ones in order to pass off the former as the latter.

6) If you suspect you have received counterfeit banknotes, hand them over to the police or banks immediately. Do not attempt to use them.
