Beware of Scam Calls Purportedly from Mainland Communications Administration
2023-01-13

Defrauding Tricks

Recently, the Police have received reports from members of the public about receiving local calls with prefix “+86” or with eight numbers. The caller, speaking in Putonghua, impersonated staff of a municipal communications administration in the Mainland and claimed that the recipients’ identities were stolen for SIM card registration and sending of mass phishing messages. The recipients were asked to co-operate with investigation. The calls were then forwarded to another scammer impersonating Mainland law enforcement officer, who alleged that the recipients had committed money laundering offence and requested their personal information, bank account numbers and passwords.
