2021-10-26

Defrauding Tricks
There are reports recently that some members of the public have received calls purportedly from staff of PayMe, an e-payment platform.  The scammers, who were able to state the name in full as well as the HKID card number of the call recipients, attempted to get control of the latter’s e-wallets and drain their deposit by asking them for such information as the one-time SMS ‘verification code’ and ‘PIN’.

Our Advice
  • Hang up and contact the customer service team directly for verification for incoming calls purportedly from PayMe staff.
  • Change the PIN of e-wallet regularly.
  • Activate the e-wallet notification and stay heed of emails and SMS messages. Check with the e-wallet service providers for any suspicious transactions or alterations spotted.
  • Do not disclose to strangers any SMS ‘verification code’ or ‘PIN’ of your e-wallet. Nor should you key in any data via the embedded link of the suspicious messages.
  • Remind your relatives and friends to stay vigilant against deception.
  • If in doubt, please call the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222” for advice.
