Telephone Deception (Impersonating Staff of Telecommunications Companies)
2019-03-22

It has recently come to the Police’s attention that swindlers are making scam phone calls by impersonating staff of telecommunications companies. Please stay alert!
Modus Operandi
Members of the public received fraudulent notification of mobile phone account irregularities through pre-recorded voice messages stating the mobile services were malfunctioning and would be suspended within the next 2 hours. Swindlers then impersonating staff of the telecommunications company alleged that the customers were involved in criminal cases in the Mainland. The calls were then forwarded to another swindler pretending to be the official of the Mainland law enforcement authorities who used various pretexts to con the customers into providing their personal information, such as names, ID card numbers, bank account numbers and PIN codes.
Our Advice
  • Contact the customer service hotline of the telecommunications companies or visit the retail stores in person for clarification and conformation of the mobile phone account status.
  • DO NOT install any unknown software or suspicious application on mobile phone or computer.
  • DO NOT input any personal information into any unknown website or unknown APP.
  • Remember the “Three DOs” against telephone deception — “Hang Up”, “Verify” and “Get Help”.
