Beware of scammers impersonating salespersons of subscription TV companies selling set-top boxes

Defrauding Trick
Recently, it has come to the Police's attention that fraudsters, posing as salespersons of domestic subscription television (TV) companies, made doorsteps sales visits to promote high-definition TV set-top boxes at preferential prices and offer on-site installation services for victims. After gaining victims' trust, fraudsters offered to sell high-end electronic products at preferential prices and lured victims to pay large deposits for bulk orders claiming that profit could be gained from resale. Fraudsters would borrow victims' credit cards to buy the products in bulk claiming that reimbursement would be made later while the victims could earn credit card reward points. After receiving the deposits or the electronic products, the fraudsters vanished into thin air.
Our Advice
- If someone visits your home and claims to be a salesperson of a subscription TV company or a telecommunication company selling set-top boxes, you should ask the visitor for proof of staff identity and make verification with the relevant companies.
- Do not disclose any personal data to strangers, including names, ID card numbers, bank account numbers, passwords and balances.
- Remind your relatives and friends to stay alert against deception.
