Beware of Fraudulent Fundraising Activities Purportedly Held by the LOCPG
2021-07-26
Recently, it has come to the Police’s attention that fraudsters, posing as the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (LOCPG), send phishing SMS messages to members of the public through mobile messaging applications to raise fund for the flood victims in Henan. Fraudsters claim that donations can be made by cheque only to obtain the bank account details and signatures of the victims.
Our Advice
- If you receive unknown calls soliciting donations, you should verify with the corresponding organisations. If you receive calls purporting to be from staff of the corresponding organisations, verify the identity of callers;
- If you receive calls purporting to be from local organisations and prefixed with “+” sign, it is likely to be a scam call originating from outside Hong Kong;
- Do not disclose to strangers such personal information as your name, ID card number, bank account number, online banking account and password;
- Remind your relatives and friends to stay vigilant against deception;
- If in doubt, please call the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222” for enquiries.
