Phishing emails purportedly from the “HK Electric”

Recently, it has come to the Police’s attention that fraudsters send bogus emails with malicious links to members of the public purporting to be from the The Hongkong Electric Company, Limited (“HK Electric”). The email claims the HK Electric will arrange for refund of electricity charges and for which members of the public are requested to click on a hyperlink to verify their identity. After clicking on the link, members of the public are taken to a fraudulent “HK Electric” website where they are asked to input their personal and credit card details.
Our Advice
- Do not connect to the any suspicious websites via hyperlinks embedded in emails;
- Do not click on any links or open any attachments embedded in suspicious emails;
- Pay attention to the spelling of the hyperlink. Check carefully if the link is identical with the website of relevant organisations in order to distinguish the authenticity of the link;
- Do not input credit card details or security codes to unknown applications or websites;
- Check out the notice on the HK Electric website, or contact its Customer Centre for enquiries
